HARP SECTION INFORMATION

FRANCES KELLY

Frances Kelly first studied the harp as a junior exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music. She subsequently read music at Cambridge University and furthered her harp studies with the wonderful and renowned Dutch harpist and teacher, Phia Berghout.

Teaching is a much-loved part of her life; in addition to her private practice, Frances taught for many years at Junior Trinity, at the Bedales Schools, and she holds posts as Professor of Early Harp at both the Royal Academy of Music and at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. She has also taught at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, The Royal College of Music, and has given workshops and masterclasses at the Royal Northern College of Music, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and the Royal Conservatoire of Music in the Hague.

Frances has enjoyed a wide-ranging career reflecting her broad interest in music from the middle-ages to the present day. She is now best known for her pioneering work with early harps, working regularly with the Sixteen, the Orchestra of the Enlightenment, many other distinguished early music ensembles, and as a continuo harpist with English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, English Touring Opera, and at Glyndebourne. She has made numerous recordings and has delighted in many chamber music collaborations. Her work has taken her throughout Europe and to the USA, Mexico, China and Japan.
